Some women, for various reasons, are looking forward to menopause. They ask, when can I expect menopause? Now for me, menopause does not bring high hopes, as my grandmother suffered terribly for 40 years with menopause. On the flip side, I have had several nurse friends that have been suffering with debilitating menstrual cycles and other hormonal issues and undergone multiple, unsuccessful procedures, that make them see menopause as the Holy Grail! For them, menopause, with all of its symptoms, is seen as a welcomed relief.
Menopause is caused due to a decrease in the female hormones estrogen and progesterone; primarily estrogen. Early menopause is determined when a woman has symptoms of menopause prior to 40 years old. So what differentiates early menopause and ‘regular’ menopause? Well, the symptoms are the same, but those with early menopause have the added increased chance of osteoporosis and heart disease. Some literature state those who have never been pregnant are more likely to experience early menopause.
